Since Kelly and I are doing our Female Creators countdown this week, I didn’t have time to do spotlights on female-created comics like I normally like to do in March. Instead, though, I asked the nifty comic book writer Regine L. Sawyer to do some spotlights on fellow members of her Women In Comics NYC Collective. Here is her first spotlight! – BC
Vanessa Verduga wears many hats in both the Comic Book and Multimedia Industry. As an acclaimed SAG Actor, Producer, Screenwriter, Director, and Lawyer; Vanessa has prided herself on developing thoughtful and diverse intellectual properties. Her projects range from Web Series creation to Off Broadway production to Independent film directing to Comic Book writing.
Her most renowned project is the multi-award winning “Justice Woman”; a web series about a New York Assistant District Attorney Sofia Escala, who, upon discovering corruption within her own Department, decides to become a masked crime fighter along with the help of her office-mate Robert ‘Roberta’ Gallion. The series, which is going into its Fourth season, is fun, smart, with enough campiness to harken the days of “Batman” in the 1960’s. To complement the series as well as expand her reach, Vanessa decided to throw herself into the ring of comic book writing and creating. The “Justice Woman Begins” comic book series debuted in 2013, taking the readers back to Sofia’s days as a young “Justice Woman”, defending her friend Robert from bullies in the school yard.
In addition to her film and television endeavors; Vanessa is a blogger, giving her thoughts and opinions on the multi-media industry. Her articles have been featured on such websites as NBC Latino, Latin Heat Entertainment and PolicyMic. Currently, Vanessa is in Los Angeles, working on her ever-expanding ‘Justice Woman’ brand as well as promoting her films ‘H.O.M.E’, ‘Danny First’ and is in pre-production for a comedy feature film she has written, titled ‘The Implications of Cohabitation.’
